While it’s exciting to consider the possibilities stemming from this era of innovation — which directors and futurists for decades have envisioned — that allows us to watch a movie “anywhere, anytime,” the more preoccupied we become with the technologies of how movies can reach us, the less we seem to ask the most important question: How do we really want to experience a film?
He states that the filmmaker’s intention is the big screen but that’s not necessarily the case anymore.
Technology will need to make many more huge leaps before one can ever view films with the level of picture and sound quality many film lovers demand without having to slide a disc into a player…

360 degree panoramic video has been around for some time now. It’s usually a one-off thing that requires specialized software to play back. Kogeto doesn’t change this but has allowed the average person to create their own via an attachment. The attachment is a static conical mirror placed over the iPhone 4 camera. What Kogeto has done is simply recorded a conical image and then deciphered the reverse algorithm for the mirror’s physical warp. This is a very old Photoshop technique that has been applied to video.
It would be cool to make a one-take music video in this method. Editing is out of the question for various obvious reasons including the stylistic one where music videos tend to have quick cuts. However, I can envision endless user-generated music videos in the way Canibus created endless song variations on his Poet Laureate album. Gimmicky but cool.

The day after Bin Laden was reported murdered, this stunning photo was released. It’s a photograph reportedly taken during a viewing of the live feed of Bin Laden’s murder. I’m a big fan of the White House Flickr stream and have posted countless photographs on Facebook but I was reluctant to post this here due to the sheer number of stunning photos taken that night. Each one captivates me much longer than normal. The fact that most of these photos are staged doesn’t remove value from this photograph.

At first glance, you would say The Situation Room is stunning due to the looks on people’s faces, the events surrounding the photograph, the burn bag, and the mystery of exactly what they are looking at. I agree that this alone makes this photo remarkable. However, the true value of this photo is in it’s reflection of America right now. “Isn’t that what a photograph should be?”, you say. Sometimes.
If this photograph were to be shown 10 years ago to an American, they’d have a tough time picking out the President. If you look closely, technically, the only person in focus is Hilary Clinton. Obama is off-center, slouching, out of focus, and is not in alpha-male form. He’s not wearing a tie or a blazer. If you go back and look at the historic Presidential photographs of the U.S. you will not find a woman of power in them. This photograph not only functions as a historic time-stamp but also subtly captures the face of America right now in the most honest fashion. It captures current America in a way no other photograph has. That’s remarkable.

Talking Funny finally aired this past weekend. Talking Funny is an HBO special that features Jerry Seinfeld, Chris Rock, Ricky Gervais, and Louis CK sitting around each other discussing comedy. I’ve seen Louis CK enough times live to know not to miss this special.
I’m not a big fan of Seinfeld or Gervais but I’ve seen enough of their stand-up to respect them and value their opinions. Talking Funny is genuinely interesting and gut-busting. What they are discussing boils down to the age old question of what’s funny and why. There isn’t much new here but the stories, antics, analogies, and insults these guys dish out make this completely worthwhile.
Although, I didn’t like how the special looked visually (the whole purple/green thing), content is king right? These guys break down why content isn’t king and why what they do is like no other art form. Catch it!

For the past few years cellphone photography has been on the rise. Some like the faux film Instagram hipster apps. Most don’t. I won’t put those here. Mine are straight from my phone.

The Sidibe/Kravitz connection occurs again but not with Lenny this time. I honestly want to see this. Zoe Kravitz stole the show in It’s Kind of a Funny Story and that’s tough to do when Galifianakis is on-board. Thanks Amil for this.

I love grapefruit. I don’t drink coffee but it smells amazing. I recently stored grapefruit wedges in a container that previously had coffee. In a rush one morning I ate them all…coffee taste and all. It was amazing. It was so amazing in fact that I Googled it. It exists. I need to try Coffee Grapefruit ice cream.

I recently went to go see the last showing of A Free Man of Color at Lincoln Center. I bought tickets the afternoon of the showing and sat in the fourth row. Because the theater is so small and circular, one feels very intimate with the star-studded cast.
The play takes place during the beginning of the United States of America and follows the conflicts of a wealthy man of color during that time. Mos Def portrays a slave. It’s the best acting I’ve ever seen him do.
I wish there was more melodic music but what was there was great and served it’s purpose. I thoroughly enjoyed it and would recommend it.

As many times as I’ve seen a rat in a subway car I’ve never seen this. Awesome.
