Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS USM Telephoto Lens

The old $500 version of this lens has been added to the L-series line of Canon lenses. Spec-wise it doesn’t appear to be different from the old version but the glass is better and the physical size is smaller. I’d like to take this one out.

Apple AirPlay on a Windows Machine [AirMediaPlayer]

I was able to get Apple AirPlay on my television without an AppleTV using my Home Theatre PC [HTPC] with AirMediaPlayer. I don’t have any Apple devices but my girlfriend does and this addition isn’t bad. The free software, AirMediaPlayer, has since been pulled but you can download it right here:

You will need:

-AirMediaPlayer
-Microsoft .NET framework 3.5 SP1 (free from Microsoft)
-Bonjour for Windows (get Bonjour Print Services for Windows free from Apple)

UJAM [Your Personal Music Algorithm]

My friend Travis made a random melody generator for his college thesis some time ago. UJAM is remotely similar. It’s basically a semi-random harmony generator for your musical melodies. There are also some other bells and whistles that come with your average online recording studio but the user friendly interface here is quite inviting. Most musicians, including myself, would say this is cheating or a toy but I think it’s a great toy! And if you think it’s cheating, where have you been for the past 20 years? The video above demonstrates this much better than I can explain.

Hot Tub Time Machine [ESOTSM]

I watched Hot Tub Time Machine a few weeks ago. I know, I know, it’s a bad comedy. It had it’s moments! About halfway into the movie something hit me. Hot Tub Time Machine is a giant homage to Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.

The plotline, the dialog, the characters, the message, and later in the movie, the visuals are all tasteful references. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is my favorite movie in existence, so coming across this while watching a movie I had zero expectations of was quite rewarding. Not once did I feel the writer/director was pulling a fast one. I may go get this blu-ray.

L’appartement [Movie]

I don’t watch many movies, but when I do they tend to be foreign ones. My Netflix movie queue is ridiculously long and about 10 years in the making. Over 1000 movies at an average of 2 hours per movie at 1 movie a week would take me exactly 20 years to watch them all. And that’s not including new movies. I barely watch 1 movie a month. There’s no way I’m watching all these in my lifetime.



L’appartement (aka The Apartment) is a famous French flick from the 90′s. While watching it I immediately recognized the leading male actor but didn’t know where from. With a little help from IMDB, Vincent Cassel‘s most recent role was the ballet teacher in Black Swan. I wish I planned it this way but there are plenty of parallels between Black Swan and L’appartement. Check it out after you see Black Swan. Also, supposedly Wicker Park is the American remake of L’appartement. I have no intentions of seeing it.
