Fix Aliasing and Moire with VAF-5D2

The number one reason why I still prefer to shoot with the Canon 7D over the Canon 5D MII is that the 5D suffers from horrible aliasing and horrible moire effects. These effects in a film or a music video scream amateur. It’s like listening to music mp3′s at 96kbps. Unacceptable. The 7D has these effects but not nearly as noticeable as the 5D.
Enter the VAF-5D2. This small attachment easily slips between the lens and your sensor on your 5D. It’s safe and super easy to install. Now, there are a few things to be mentioned. The attachment means there is more glass in front of your sensor. It’s good glass but it’s glass and people are understandably super picky with that. It affects your pictures in picture mode. Also, putting this glass there slightly changes the focal distance you have with your lenses. This is similar to using ground glass in the old 35mm adapter days. The lens now focuses on the glass instead of the sensor. And just like those days, you’ll notice very slight softness in the corners at your widest.
$365 is pricey but what is it worth to you to sort of fix the two major problems with your 5D? Here’s a video that shows the drastic differences in using the VAF-5D2:
