Another Earth
Directed by MIKE CAHILL
$24.99
A habitable planet is discovered fairly close to Earth.
As you know me, I had to suspend quite a bit of belief to watch this film as I believe this could never happen. There are no other human habitable planets out there. Regardless, this film touched on some interesting concepts and played out some interesting scenarios. If it weren’t for the director’s poor decision to man the camera himself I’d only fault the quality of acting.
This movie was shot on the popular Sony EX3 camera. This is a not a filmic camera. It was popular around 2005 when cinematographers would put 35mm adapters on it to obtain somewhat of a filmic look. Due to the amount of post production effects in Another Earth, the film Monsters would be a perfect comparison of how good your EX3 can look on the big screen. Philip Bloom also has some great examples of how well this combination can look. The fact that this was shot at 30fps didn’t really help either.
Overall you have bad acting, a low budget look, and an interesting story. If you can make it to the end despite these things, this will be worth it.
