Kathrine Switzer [Photo]

Here’s the story of Kathrine Switzer, the first woman to run the Boston Marathon:

In 1967, Kathrine Switzer was the first woman to run the Boston marathon. After realizing that a woman was running, race organizer Jock Semple went after Switzer shouting, “Get the hell out of my race and give me those numbers.” However, Switzer’s boyfriend and other male runners provided a protective shield during the entire marathon. The photographs taken of the incident made world headlines, and Kathrine later won the NYC marathon with a time of 3:07:29.

One of the many spur of the moment scenes shot during ESOTSM to display Joel and Clem’s relationship. Those aren’t extras back there.

Why I don’t like The Office [Thoughts]

Bill Burr puts it into words better than I can. An interesting note is, whenever I talk to serious comedy heads or comedians, they don’t like The Office. FYI: Bill Burr’s weekly podcasts are better than your favorite comedians’ best set.

Knuckleball! [Film]

Knuckleball!
Directed by RICKI STERN & ANNIE SUNDBERG

I’m not a fan of film festivals (that’s a whole different post) but I may have to attend one of these Knuckleball! screenings at the Tribeca Film Festival. I’ve always been fascinated by the knuckleball. It’s the pitch with no spin causing cartoonish movement involving similar physics to early rifles. The number of knuckleball pitchers is slowly dying in the big leagues. The knuckleball isn’t a pitch that big leaguers have in their arsenal because it’s such a difficult high-risk pitch to throw. You’re either a knuckleball pitcher or you’re not.

I started pitching at the age of 7 and took it all the way to a scholarship offering for college (I didn’t accept). I occasionally threw the knuckleball if I was ahead in a game. It’s very easy to look foolish throwing the knuckleball and I wouldn’t want to hear my coach air me out for giving up a hit because of it. The few times I threw it in a game caused head turns. It’s a funny looking pitch but effective when thrown correctly.

Check the times for Knuckleball!.

C-ROCK [Video]

Eric Blanco put together this video of some kids and the C-Rock. The C-Rock is a famous spot in my neighborhood, Inwood, where for as long as there has been water kids have jumped off of it. You may remember the famous scene in Basketball Diaries (below) where Leonardo DiCaprio moons the Circle Line from it. The water POV shots here are hypnotic. The summer can’t come quick enough.

YouTube Editor Upgrades [Stabilization]

Stabilization and Color Correction fixes are now just one button click after a YouTube upload. Will this increase the YouTube webcam video experience?

Also, Google bought Red Giant’s Magic Bullet Noise Reduction a few years ago. Will that be a one button click too one day? Read the full update on Google’s Blog here: Google

102 Minutes That Changed America – 9/11 [Film]

102 Minutes That Changed America
Directed by NICOLE RITTENMEYER & SETH SKUNDRICK
Edited by SETH SKUNDRICK
Amazon

This is the most tasteful, artistic, heartfelt documentary about 9/11. As a filmmaker it’s very refreshing to come across such a unique honest view of that day. The editing/sound is phenomenal.

Somehow I managed to watch every other talking heads documentary on 9/11 which include every possible angle of the attacks, etc. 102 Minutes That Changed America approaches from a different direction and focuses on the emotion during those 102 minutes. The emotion this film evokes is like no other 9/11 documentary. It’s from 2008 and won a few Emmy’s for it. The History Channel has an interactive along with the film here: History Channel
