As an audio engineer I’ve never been a Dolby fan. At home everything plays in DTS. However, Dolby recently stepped things up in two ways. One of them is major.
The whole 5.1 to 6.1 to 7.1 thing has been quite gimmicky and a bit of a hassle for content creators. Do I really need a 7.1 mix for my short film? I have a 7.1 system at home and don’t even use it as such merely because most things aren’t created in 7.1. Dolby has introduced a new dimension to surround sound. This might be a little ahead of it’s time for home theatres but it could bring someone like me back out to watch movies in public again. Watch the video for more details. Also, Dolby has created a sort of master “wrapper” file for it’s movie audio mixes. This is major because in the sea of various movie systems I lose control of how my 5.1 movie mix will sound on maybe a stereo television. This “wrapper” file can contain metadata for all systems to ensure that the creator’s integrity is maintained.

Babygirl (2012)
Written and Directed by MACDARA VALLELY
Director of Photography JARIN BLASCHKE
Babygirl is the story of Lena, a young teen growing up in the Bronx. Lena is played by first time actor, Yainis Ynoa. Between director Macdara and Yainis, Yainis played a very convincing role. Her cousin, Gleendilys Inoa, is also in the film. You may remember her from Gun Hill Road, Crush, and Yelling To the Sky. Just like Gun Hill Road and Crush it was shot on film and told in a straightforward manner. That’s the best way to tell this story. DP Jarin Blaschke captured the Bronx very honestly and well. I grew up around these locations and this is a common story here. I’d watch this again. I’d recommend this film. It’s playing at the Tribeca Film Festival now.
P.S. Yainis Ynoa looks like Sanaa Lathan.

Google Drive
drive.google.com
Free
So…Google basically renamed their already-awesome Google Docs to Google Drive. The only upgrades I can see so far are you can now install it on your desktop to give your Google Drive a physical space there and now there are a few more software built into Google Drive to handle more file types. As far as I can tell the interface is still the same. Check the link above for more info on upgraded storage pricing.
UPDATE: I’ve been monitoring my Google Docs storage all morning waiting for this announcement and it turns out Google upped the prices for storage. Luckily I upped my storage before Google Drive kicked in. 25gb was only $5 a year. I have 500gb now.

I want the Canon 1Dc. It rivals the C300. DP, Shane Hurlburt even states that it rivals the RED and the ALEXA. I don’t know about that but check the film above. It’s boring, formulaic, horribly told, and badly acted but you can get a good sense of how well the camera holds up.

I’m a longtime fan of Bill Burr and his podcast. I’m also a longtime fan of soccer. These two worlds collided when a friend of mine emailed Bill Burr about Soccer. I uploaded Bill Burr’s response to YouTube. Hilarious.

12-Bit RAW at 2432 x 1366
EF and ZE Mount
5″ 800 x 480 Integrated LCD Touchscreen
HD-SDI
$2,995
I’ve been hearing a lot about this camera during the week before NAB. Besides the Canon and RED big announcements, this little guy has peaked my interest. I’ve owned Blackmagic gear before and it’s always top notch. This camera promises 2.5K RAW with 13 Stops of dynamic range for $2,995. That’s unreal. I’ve linked to some test footage below. It’s difficult to tell quality of image but it looks good. The highlights don’t harshly blow like other popular cameras. The image is a little soft but that may not be the camera so I’ll have to see some more tests. Regardless, for the base-price, I’m impressed.
Make sure you click the thumbnail below to see how well the Blackmagic Cinema fairs in low-light situations. Check out Blackmagic’s official page here:

The video below is a promotional piece detailing the process of restoring and remastering Jaws from it’s original negative. If you didn’t know how a film was restored and remastered this is an interesting video.
I have all the Jaws movies on blu-ray already. No, I didn’t pay for them. The issue of restoring and remastering is always a touchy one. Is the director’s integrity being maintained? The colorist’s? The audio mixers? It’s very easy to damage a films integrity during the remastering phase. Even Criterion, known for their remastering, sometimes botches the job. It’s very easy to remove detail when remastering and judging by the comparative still, I’m a little worried. Analog color timing effects color, range, highlights, etc, differently than a digital system. I’ll have to go back and compare both versions side by side to see what was done.
Regardless of all this, a very small amount of people actually care. You’d have to have really like an okay movie, really care about remastering integrity, and own a television that’s calibrated enough to even enjoy it. This is a small amount of people. I’m not in that group of people. If this was done for Star Wars…a lot more people would care. Unfortunately, George Lucas will have to die before that happens. (Sidenote: I used the coloring suite used for this on my last film, Lapse.)
