The video below is a promotional piece detailing the process of restoring and remastering Jaws from it’s original negative. If you didn’t know how a film was restored and remastered this is an interesting video.
I have all the Jaws movies on blu-ray already. No, I didn’t pay for them. The issue of restoring and remastering is always a touchy one. Is the director’s integrity being maintained? The colorist’s? The audio mixers? It’s very easy to damage a films integrity during the remastering phase. Even Criterion, known for their remastering, sometimes botches the job. It’s very easy to remove detail when remastering and judging by the comparative still, I’m a little worried. Analog color timing effects color, range, highlights, etc, differently than a digital system. I’ll have to go back and compare both versions side by side to see what was done.
Regardless of all this, a very small amount of people actually care. You’d have to have really like an okay movie, really care about remastering integrity, and own a television that’s calibrated enough to even enjoy it. This is a small amount of people. I’m not in that group of people. If this was done for Star Wars…a lot more people would care. Unfortunately, George Lucas will have to die before that happens. (Sidenote: I used the coloring suite used for this on my last film, Lapse.)
