Babygirl is the story of Lena, a young teen growing up in the Bronx. Lena is played by first time actor, Yainis Ynoa. Between director Macdara and Yainis, Yainis played a very convincing role. Her cousin, Gleendilys Inoa, is also in the film. You may remember her from Gun Hill Road, Crush, and Yelling To the Sky. Just like Gun Hill Road and Crush it was shot on film and told in a straightforward manner. That’s the best way to tell this story. DP Jarin Blaschke captured the Bronx very honestly and well. I grew up around these locations and this is a common story here. I’d watch this again. I’d recommend this film. It’s playing at the Tribeca Film Festival now.

P.S. Yainis Ynoa looks like Sanaa Lathan.
